Crawling Human (Birdwise, Albanese, Bastrade) are... are... are...

They dug and they dug, so their day
went by for them, their night. And they did not praise
God

who, so they heard, wanted all this,
who, so they heard, knew all this.

They dug and heard nothing more;
they did not grow wise, invented no song,
thought up for themselves no language,
They dug.

Selectors' Presents: Certain Creatures / Angus Tarnawsky / Nathaniel Young

Selectors' Records Presents:

Certain Creatures (NYC/ Styles Upon Styles)
with:
Angus Tarnawsly (NYC / In Context Music)
and
Nathaniel Young (NYC / Blankstairs / Styles Upon Styles)

Certain Creatures

Brooklyn based Oliver Chapoy's project Certain Creatures wrestles with the three marks of existence - impermanence, suffering and realisation of the non-self - throughout Vipassanā, his debut album on Styles Upon Styles.

Vipassanā, a Buddhist term denoting insight into the true nature of reality, explores Oliver’s relationship between the self and external stimuli, chronicled across twelve episodes of power electronics, techno and darkwave pop. Oliver addresses a spectrum of expression, from ferocity and indifference to love and transcendence, with a narrative strength emanating from over 15 years of writing experience across various genres.

Oliver’s resumé extends from the early 90’s when he was a pivotal player in Miami’s hardcore scene by way of his band, Shai Hulud, before moving into post-rock territory (Saxon Shore) and electronic pop (Warm Ghost). Since departing from Warm Ghost, however, Oliver has focused on electronics in a solo environment: His first release as Certain Creatures dropped in 2013 as part of our Bangers & Ash 12” series, providing a menacing slap of dystopian techno w/ guest vocals from Stuart Argabright.

His collaboration with Stuart led to the most prominent credit in Oliver’s production career: the opportunity to produce Black Rain’s first album of new material since 1996. Dark Pool (Blackest Ever Black), heralded as Black Rain’s comeback proper, provided the best scope of Oliver’s production and compositional talent to date. With Vipassanā, Oliver offers a searing discourse on the harrowing beauty of acknowledging, confronting and transcending oneself.

The arc of the album is personal, conveyed to great effect through the use of Oliver’s own voice in standouts, "Colour Me In" and "Nothing Changes", the former a deep trip through vocoded psychosis, the latter a noir pop odyssey akin to The Fragile’s finer moments. Paul Corley (Oneohtrix Point Never, Tim Hecker, Antony) lends his revered mixing acumen to Vipassanā, casting shadows across haunting features from Bonnie Baxter (Shadowbox / Kill Alters) and Jon Philpot (Bear in Heaven) on "The Suffering Seas" and "In Safety of Cold Light,” respectively. These collaborative efforts propel Vipassanā to heights beyond the traditional techno album. Years of experiencing and participating in club culture have provided the groundwork for Vipassanā, but it’s his compositional prowess that carries Certain Creatures' debut album beyond the horde.

Certain Creatures’ Vipassanā will be available October 30, 2015 on limited 2xLP vinyl and unlimited digital.

Selectors' Presents: Pietro Sammarco with The Rita: Vancouver Noise and the Harmoniously Productive City

We're pleased to host this excellent event in partnership with the Unit/Pitt Gallery (www.helenpittgallery.org) on one of our favorite subjects: noise.

Pietro Sammarco will present a talk on the history of noise regulation in Vancouver, followed by a response in the form of a performance by internationally-acclaimed “harsh noise” performer The Rita.

Vancouver’s urban noise by-law was written in 1938, a year after the Non-Partisan Association (NPA) first gained control of the city government. A typical Progressive Era party comprised of businessmen employing scientific management, the NPA led council over the next thirty years in seeking to abate urban noise as obstruction to productivity, and thereby facilitate Vancouver as a space for efficient economic exchange. Vancouver noise’s bylaw coordinated this effort, yet made no use of objective measuring devices for enforcement. It relied heavily on subjective definitions, and thus proved to be enforceable only through overtly political decisions. In the 1970s, with a dramatic change in local government and a distinct shift in ideology, the justification for noise abatement turned from hard-nosed economic growth toward production of the so-called “livable city.”

Pietro Sammarco is currently a graduate student in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University, combining the fields of soundscape composition and media education. His SSHRC-funded research explores the pedagogical opportunities encountered in the media production studio by focusing on the social meanings and material possibilities of “waste.” He records bands, does music and sound for film, and DJs karaoke. Sammarco is a former director of The Safe Amplification Site Society, a non-profit dedicated to music for people of all ages.

Sam McKinlay is The Rita. http://bakurita.blogspot.ca/

TRUNCATE BIOGRAPHY

After being introduced to electronic music back in the early 90s in Los Angeles, a then teenager David Flores was hooked. He started DJing at all over Southern California at underground warehouses, desert parties, and raves. His style then was as varied as the local scene - a myriad of sounds ranging from house to acid to techno to hardcore.

After a few years on the DJ circuit, he began releasing original music under the moniker Audio Injection, which landed on labels such as Monoid, Stimulus, 4 Track & LA label Droid Recordings. His association with Droid Behavior began in 2003 and continues years later where you can still find him as a resident at the infamous and internationally acclaimed Interface event series alongside Drumcell and Raiz.

In early 2011, he started a project called 'Truncate' which focuses on the deeper, more raw side of techno. His Truncate releases have been gain support from world class performers such as Modeselektor, Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann, Chris Liebing, Speedy J, DVS1, Luke Slater, Ben Sims, Josh Wink, East Everything, Len Faki and many more. Since then, he has provided remixes for artists across the musical spectrum like Kink! on Pets Recordings, Slam on Soma, and Trus’me on Prime Numbers. He has also released original tracks on 50 Weapons and Ultramajic collaborating with Jimmy Edgar.

A rigorous international tour schedule has followed, including included stops at the most prestigious venues and events, including Berghain in Berlin, Fabric in London, Concrete in Paris, The Movement Festival in Detroit, Womb in Tokyo, Dimensions Festival in Croatia and Output in New York.

With his heavy remix, production and touring schedule there is no slowing down for David as he continues to shape his own sound, and place Los Angeles on the techno map.

Selectors' Presents: Kevin Schmidt’s EDM House Record Release

Please join us for the record release party for the vinyl version of Kevin Schmidt’s EDM House project.

Originally an installation and film, EDM House was commissioned by Fogo Island Arts and completed during a 2013 residency there. The film version of the work presents a cabin in the snow-covered, mountainous woods of northern BC, covered in strings of coloured lights that pulsate and flicker in rhythm with an EDM soundtrack composed by Schmidt. Like past works Fog (2004), Burning Bush (2005), Wild Signals (2007), and especially Long Beach Led Zep (2002), EDM House demonstrates Schmidt’s unique ability to balance his interest in the sublime with a sly sense of humour.

For more information about the work, check out these links:

The vinyl edition of EDM House was produced with support by the Or Gallery and the Contemporary Art Gallery.

The artist will be attendance, the record will be played, other music will be played, and beverages will be available.

Please come and enjoy.

Selectors' Presents: Existential Dread: Autumnal Dub Selections with Joda C.

It's happening. The air is getting colder, the nights longer. Onetime lush greenery is rapidly turning yellow and red. The natural world is constricting, dying just a little bit in readiness as this side of the world tilts away from the sun. The fall can be a moody time, haunted by the inexorability of death. These are inviolable facts, friends. But is this dreadful? Yes, indeed. And yet, the seasonal turn is also rich, soulful – an odd dark light.

Please join us for a night of autumnal dub as expert selector Joda Clément digs into the crates to battle dread with dread.
