Quiet City #36: Ivory Towers ⊚ Lavender ⊚ Marc Kate

21192840_10155407415536628_2491749182226600619_n.jpg

Quiet City is a series of deep-listening concerts in Vancouver, focused on live performances of experimental, electronic and improvised music in a comfortable and intimate setting. Established in January 2010, we are now in our eighth year of programming.

The thirty-sixth edition of this series will be featuring performances by:
⊚ Ivory Towers
⊚ Lavender (Portland)
⊚ Marc Kate (San Francisco)

Presented by Soundscape & Panospria

---------- 8< ----------- 8< -----------

■ IVORY TOWERS ■
http://ivorytowersmusic.com/

Quinne Rodgers is a visual artist, video director, and musician from Vancouver, BC. Formerly half of the feminist electronic duo MYTHS (alongside Lief Hall), Quinne now writes, performs and produces the haunted music evocation project Ivory Towers.

■ LAVENDER ■
http://lavendersynth.com/

Certain recordings are meant to be absorbed as sensorial experiences - reminders that music is not only about hooks and melodies, but it is deeply grounded on textural qualities, ambience and raw emotion. This is the vision that drives the work of San Francisco-based composer and producer Lavender. His forward-thinking and ethereal songs echo the work of artists the likes of Alessandro Cortini, Tim Hecker, Four Tet, and Deru. His debut album 'Mystique Youth' embodies the aesthetics of minimal electronica, the cinematic landscapes of post-rock, and the organic qualities of experimentalism.

■ MARC KATE ■
http://marckate.com/

Originally trained as a filmmaker and visual artist, San Francisco-based producer and composer Marc Kate applies cinematic and conceptual approaches to music and audio production. As a response to the tech culture assault on San Francisco (and the world), Kate takes up the tools of the trade — computers and synthesis — and slyly counter-attacks, imbuing humanity precisely where humanity is being evacuated. He creates a counterpoint to tech’s speed and greed — slow, immersive, materialist, drifting. Kate also draws from his history in San Francisco’s synth-punk and techno scenes, emerging to create stripped-down, static experiments in synthesis. He has released solo material on the labels Computer Tapes, Jacktone, Loöq, HNYTRX, Trip Show and Treehouse Muzique, and his own imprints Untitled & After and Failing Forms.

Listening Group: The Red Krayola

19961464_10154984495238068_2068541931875333146_n.jpg

In conjunction with the release of the Hotel Theory Reader, Fillip is pleased to present a Listening Group focused on the music of the Red Krayola at Selectors' Records followed by an afterparty at the Projection Room.

Join curator Jordan Strom and musician Casey Wei for an evening looking at the radical output of the experimental band the Red Krayola (originally the Red Crayola). Active on and off since 1966, the group's output defies easy classification. As a Pitchfork review of their 1967 album "The Parable of Arable Land" surmised, "It's a band that has no idea how to play its instruments. In fact, they don't even know what instruments are." the Red Krayola was founded in Texas by visual artist Mayo Thompson, writer Frederick Barthelme, and musician Steve Cunningham and is a frequent collaborator of British conceptual art group Art & Language.

Drinks and light snacks will be served.

Free afterparty at the Projection Room (upstairs at the Fox Cabaret) beginning at 9 pm with music by Darwin Meyers. Everyone welcome!

Speakers:
Jordan Strom is Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at Surrey Art Gallery and a former editor at Fillip.

Casey Wei is a Vancouver-based artist, musician, and the curator of art rock?, a monthly performance night held at The Astoria.

About Hotel Theory:
The Hotel Theory Reader is the fourth title in Fillip’s ongoing Folio Series presenting writing by critics, artists, and curators that engages specific and recurring questions on international contemporary art. This anthology explores the possibilities of theory as an art form, bringing together ideas initially explored in an exhibition organized in 2015 at REDCAT | CalArts’ Downtown Center for Contemporary Arts. The book assembles a collection of texts by David Antin, Art & Language, Ruth Estévez, Bruce Hainley, Wayne Koestenbaum, Chris Kraus, Snejanka Mihaylova, Sohrab Mohebbi, Cally Spooner, V-Girls, Danna Vajda, and Tirdad Zolghadr.

Edited by Sohrab Mohebbi in collaboration with Ruth Estévez, Hotel Theory Reader is co-published by Fillip and REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney / CalArts Theater), Los Angeles.

Panospria Soirée: Black Market & Hitori Tori

18921799_10154919914978495_5297093338345742692_n.jpg

■ BLACK MARKET (TORONTO)
https://www.discogs.com/artist/969353-Blake-Markle

Blake Markle is a multi-instrumentalist who has been making music for decades, and his many influences are clearly reflected in his varied musical output. With a background in jazz and rock music, he was not particularly interested in electronic music until the early sounds of jungle and drum & bass caught his ear in 1995. As a student of electroacoustic music, and armed with the purchase of a new sampler and sequencer, he delved into learning the techniques used to create this new music, experimenting with everything from dub to techno, electronic jazz-fusion, and experimental beats. After completing a bachelor's degree in physics, he decided to take his master's in music technology. This was an opportunity to extend many of the signal processing techniques learned in science to the field of music. The end product was a thesis on the subject of time stretching, a concept that involves changing the length of a sound without affecting the pitch. This process is crucial to Blake's music, which inevitably involves the use of sampled drum loops. For the thesis, several algorithms for different methods of time stretching were written and tested on a variety of sounds. As a result, many sounds in Blake's music have been processed by the custom algorithms used in the thesis.

By 2000, Blake had embarked on an extensive project to rework of the music of Miles Davis. Specifically, he chose to remix the entire album "Filles de Kilimanjaro" which was originally released in 1968. A true labor of love which took nearly a year to complete, this exercise was where Blake honed his unique beat cutting skills. He was an artist-in-residence at Banff Center for the Arts in 2001, and the following year he founded the now legendary "Plateau Flexout" at Saphir Nightclub, the only weekly night for IDM & breakcore in Montreal. Fast-forward to 2005, where his achievements included the release of two epic albums, "Sabres High" as Black Market and "Isis" under the alias Zark Behida. The latter was a sprawling sci-fi prog-jungle concept album, presented in the form of an online storybook with pictures and text corresponding to each of the 22 tracks. It was voted 15th best album of the year by Tiny Voices. In 2006, Blake toured Europe as part of the Panospria label showcase with Ruairi Lazers and Scant Intone, rocking parties from Berlin to Amsterdam to Dublin.

His releases under a variety of aliases have surfaced on a variety of labels including Wikkid, g25, Trotch, Acroplane, JungleXpeditions, and Panospria. A tireless live performer, he has shared the stage with such artists as Mu-Ziq, Venetian Snares, Lowfish, Vorpal, Duran Duran Duran, Enduser, David Kristian, 1-Speed Bike, Drop the Lime and many others. Blake represented Montreal in the first ever Philadelphia Laptop Battle in 2004, as well as high profile bookings at Montreal Jazz Festival, Pop Montreal, and Suoni Per il Popolo.

■ HITORI TORI
http://hitoritori.tumblr.com/

In 1998 Julian’s four track recorder was tragically destroyed. A sound tracker completely changed everything and Hitori Tori was born. Agitated breaks became combined with tweaked arpeggiated synth lines, some cut up vocals, and a few lugubrious tones were thrown into the background for good measure. He has released on many labels over the past decade, including Peace Off Records, Kaometry and Meganeural.

Hitori’s live performances have received positive acclaim in publications such as Computer Music Magazine and Create Digital Music. Over the past several years Hitori Tori has toured in Japan and Europe, including dates at festivals such as Bangface Weekender and Breakcore Gives Me Wood.

Selectors' Records Presents: Mood Tattooed (Blank Stairs / NYC) With S.P. Davis

Please join us for an evening with Psychedelic-Folk, Singer-Songwriter Hagan Knauth, hot from his recent appearance at Debacle Festival ... with local support from S.P. Davis

Mood Tattooed is Hagan Knauth, a singer, songwriter, producer, and performer hailing from upstate New York. Growing up on acres of farmland, Hagan spent his early years exploring the rural setting in which he lived, drawing inspiration from all corners of nature. His connection with the outdoors is ever present in his music, manifesting itself as layers of echoic guitar, singing, flute, and field recordings. For his latest record Hush Tarantula (out now on Blankstairs), Hagan converges these elements into an intimate sonic journey through landscapes of the mind.

Selectors' Presents: Morgane Oger

18199236_1979305562297621_6215940905453360917_n.jpg

Please join us as we welcome Morgane Oger, the BC NDP candidate for Vancouver-False Creek, to the shop.

Oger is the first transgender woman running to be an MLA in BC, which is itself cool. And as Chair of the Trans Alliance Society and Chair of the Vancouver District Parent Advisory Council, she is also a passionate advocate for education, families, and equality. We're proud to have her in the shop and we think you should come meet her, even if your home riding is elsewhere. Our good pals and DJs Matt Tecson and Ashlee Lúk will also be on hand to supply some sweet, sweet music.

For more information about Morgane Oger and to donate to her campaign, check out her BC NDP team page: https://morganeoger.bcndp.ca/.

Support the BC NDP this election. WE NEED TO VOTE THE BC LIBERALS OUT!

Luke Fowler: Electro-pythagorus
Wednesday, March 29 at 7 PM - 9 PM
Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema
SFU at 149 W. Hastings St.

Electro-pythagorus is a portrait of Canadian computer music creator and Western Front co-founder Martin Bartlett, who was a student of Pauline Oliveros, David Tudor, John Cage and Pandit Pran Nath. Created largely from previously unseen archival material (correspondence, personal notebooks, still photos, music, film and video) as well as new 16mm film notes that Fowler shot in Vancouver, Burnaby, Victoria and Amsterdam, the film addresses Bartlett’s life, work and the cultural milieu that he produced in. The film is a crafted consideration of Bartlett’s musical interests (minimalism, world music, early computer music languages and microtuning). It follows Fowler’s style of crafting complex portraits as a form of meta-documentary. In so doing reclaims certain elements of the Bartlett's life, whose cultural contribution has been largely unrecognized since his early passing from an AIDS related illness in the early 1990s.

Newly released, the film will be screened as a 35 mm print for its Canadian debut.

Electro-pythagorus was produced through a residency at the Western Front. The film is a co-commission of Sonic Acts & Stedelijk Museum, and is supported by the Harvard Film Study Centre, Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study and Creative Scotland.

Luke Fowler is an artist, filmmaker and musician based in Glasgow. He studied printmaking at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee. He creates cinematic collages that have often been linked to the British Free Cinema movement of the 1950s. His documentary films have explored counter cultural figures including Scottish psychiatrist R. D. Laing and English composer Cornelius Cardew.

Co-presented by SFU Galleries and Western Front.

Selectors' Presents: Desolator – Desolating The Curse

17021382_1948129925415185_3084831842883308461_n.jpg

Join us for a rare live performance by Desolating The Curse in celebration of the release of the Desolator limited edition cassette (50 hand-numbered units) on Tinker Recordings.

Curses be gone. The Desolator cures all with desolation. In a crazed rampage around the globe the Desolator seeks curses to desolate. Legal woes, romantic terror and material complications all terminated. On October 17th, 2012 Karl, an oppressively cursed teenage hesher, came across a field of bloodless dead cows. Aliens doing research was the presumptive explanation. Karl worked at an abattoir and was an avid animal necrophilia enthusiast. His love making that evening would lead to a stupendous transformation. Karl mutated into the franc Desolator a beast with the desire and conviction to terminate curse after curse. Finally Karl was no longer cursed. Long live the Desolator.

Scott Gubbels has been documenting the audio creations of the Desolator since 2012. The self-titled Desolating The Curse cassette was released by Nice Up International in an edition of 80 (sold out) in 2013. Desolator is the 2nd of three planned releases. Forthcoming on Tinker Recordings will be DTC’s third release: Kick Your Ass To Heaven. Gubbels has performed and/or released music by Destroyer, Superconductor, Deerhoof, BCVCO and Angst Hase Pfeffer Nase amongst others. He currently performs and records with Kensington Gore.
